Replacement Hospital Project
Project Overview

The Barrow Replacement Hospital will be the first hospital to be built in the United States under the Title V new construction project program. Title V establishes a permanent Self-Determination program within Indian Health Services, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Self-Determination is designed to provide Tribal governments with more control and decision-making authority over the federal financial resources provided for the benefit of the Indian and Alaska Native people. Under Title V, Arctic Slope Native Association has the administrative and operational control of health service programs including the design and construction of the replacement hospital. Initial funding for the new facility was provided by the Denali Commission with additional funding coming from Indian Health Services. The replacement hospital is being built in a residential area, taking the community and neighbors into consideration. The design and function of the new hospital is focused on having minimal impact on the neighborhood and traditional subsistence hunting.

The new hospital will have:

·          100,000 square feet, making it four times larger than the current hospital.

·          15 Outpatient exam rooms. The current hospital has six Outpatient exam rooms.

·          Four ER beds, which is double what the current hospital has.

·          Single bed Inpatient rooms including two Labor and Delivery rooms.

·          CT

·          Optometry

·          Audiology and endoscopy services will be added to Specialty clinic.
