Staffing Support/Shifts

How many physicians are on staff?
There are positions for eight physicians. If permanent staff does not fill the positions, they are filled with Locum Tenens.

What specialties do you have on staff?
All physicians are board certified/eligible Family Practice physicians.

How long have the physicians been in Barrow?
Anywhere from two to eight years.

What is the workday schedule?
Usually two to three physicians do morning medical appointments on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and pre-natal on Tuesday and Thursday. In the afternoon from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm the walk-in clinic is staffed with anywhere from three to four physicians plus a PA.

What is the call schedule?
Call runs about 1 in 7.

What does the call consist of?
The on-call physician runs the ER, any after–hour admissions, and pending OB deliveries. All on-call physicians have a scheduled back-up physician to help if needed.

Do you have surgical capacity?
At this time we do not have surgical capacity.

What support services do you have?
We have radiology with tele-radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, sonogram, case management, and tele-medicine.

Do you have specialists available?
Throughout the year we have one-week specialty clinics run by sub-specialists from our referral hospital in Anchorage. These include: orthopedics, cardiology, gynecology, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, physical therapy, ENT, neurology and diabetes clinics. We also have radiologists who come up to do BE, Fluoroscopy, and Upper GI series.

Do you have consultants available?
Our consultants are available 24 hours a day at our referral hospital, Alaska Native Medical Center. Endocrine, Urology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Neurosurgery, and Ophthalmology are available in addition to the specialists mentioned above.

Do you have medevac services?
Our North Slope Borough Search and Rescue crew have a Lear Jet, King Air, and a helicopter available. It is run by Physician Assistants and EMT III’s. We also have multiple medevac and air ambulance services from Anchorage.

Patients

What is your average daily census?
Our average daily census is 2.3 and our average length of stay is two days.

How many patients do you see a day in your Outpatient/ER?
In the morning the Outpatient unit is run like a doctor’s office and on average 20 patients are seen. In the afternoon, the unit is run like an urgent care unit with an average of 40-60 patients being seen. The ER is open 24/7 and sees an average of 10-20 patients a day.

What is the number of OB deliveries per year?
There are about 70 OB deliveries per year.

What do you do if a patient needs a C-section?
We screen all patients to ensure that we perform only safe, low-risk deliveries. If any laboring patient seems to be having difficulty early on, or if there is any suspicion that there might be a complication, we medevac the patient to our referral hospital in Anchorage.

What is the compensation package?
In addition to generous and competitive salaries, benefits include: six weeks vacation; paid membership for two organizations; free housing; $6,000 for moving expenses; ATLS, ACLS, ALSO, CPR, NRP, PALS paid for by the hospital and not charged to CME account.
