FAQ’s Medical Imaging

Technology

What services do you provide?
We are tasked to provide routine X-ray examinations of the head, trunk, spine and extremities. We also perform IVP’s without tomograms. Once every 5-8 weeks, a radiologist comes from the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) in Anchorage, and we perform fluoroscopic examinations such as upper GI’s, barium enemas, esophagrams and small-bowel follow-throughs. Our ultrasound department performs OB/GYN, abdomen, thyroid, breast and testicular examinations. We do not perform vascular studies, but do offer mammography services through a grant program at the Wellness Center.

What type of equipment do you have?
With the exception of mammography we are fully digital. We have a GE Precision D 5000 Rad/Fluoro room, our portable machine is an AMX IV, and we have a FujiMed Smart CR. Our ultrasound unit is a refurbished ATL HDI 3000. The mammography unit is a LoRad Platinum IV, and our mammography processor is a Kodak tabletop unit.

Staff Support

Do you have a radiologist?
We do not have an onsite radiologist. We transmit all of our images, with the exception of mammograms, to ANMC via teleradiology. Mammograms are mailed to ANMC where they are interpreted and transcribed directly into RPMS, our radiology information system.

What is the average daily patient load?
We see approximately18 patients a day in the three modalities. When we have specialty clinic visits from orthopedic and arthritis specialists, our numbers can increase to as many as 40 for x-ray alone.

How many personnel work in Medical Imaging?
We are staffed with one Manager, three Radiology Technicians, one Ultrasonographer, and one part-time unit clerk.

Do you have call?
Call is rotated between the RT’s.

Licensing

Does Alaska require a state license for RT’s?
There is no current state-licensing requirement. However there is a bill before the state legislature that proposes requiring state licensure for technologists. The estimated cost for the license would be $200.

Career Paths

How do you keep your continuing education up to date?
Each year we fund a trip for our permanent technologists to attend a continuing education course. We also pay for each technologist’s membership in ASRT, which allows him or her to complete directed readings for continuing education.
